Identify the Product & Import Requirements
Determine the product category, intended use, composition, country of origin, and whether it is subject to any specific Indian regulatory requirements.
Determine the Correct HS Code
Classify the product under the appropriate HSN/HS Code, which helps determine applicable customs duty, import restrictions, and regulatory requirements.
Check Import Policy & Restrictions
Verify whether the product is Free, Restricted, Prohibited, or subject to specific conditions under India's applicable import regulations.
Obtain Required Registrations & Licenses
Depending on the product, obtain applicable registrations or approvals such as IEC, FSSAI, CDSCO, BIS, Legal Metrology, Plant Quarantine, or other sector-specific requirements.
Prepare Import Documentation
Prepare the required import documents, typically including the Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading or Airway Bill, Certificate of Origin, applicable permits or licenses, product specifications, technical documents, and insurance documents where applicable.
Check Product Labeling & Packaging
Ensure the imported product meets applicable Indian labeling, packaging, declaration, and marking requirements before it is placed on the Indian market.
Arrange Shipment & Pre-Arrival Documentation
Coordinate with the overseas supplier, freight forwarder, and customs broker to ensure shipping documents and applicable regulatory approvals are ready before arrival.
File Bill of Entry
The importer or authorized Customs Broker (CHA) files the Bill of Entry with Indian Customs, declaring the product, value, HS code, and applicable documentation.
Customs Assessment & Verification
Customs may assess the declared classification, transaction value, duty liability, and regulatory compliance. The shipment may also be selected for document verification or physical examination.
Obtain Regulatory / NOC Clearance
Where applicable, obtain clearance or NOC from relevant authorities such as FSSAI, CDSCO, Plant Quarantine, BIS, or other agencies depending on the product.
Pay Applicable Customs Duties & Taxes
Pay the assessed Basic Customs Duty, IGST, cess, and other applicable charges before clearance.
Customs Examination, if Applicable
If selected for examination, customs authorities inspect the shipment and verify the goods against the declared documents.
Obtain Customs Clearance / Out-of-Charge
Once all applicable requirements are satisfied and duties are paid, Customs issues the Out-of-Charge (OOC) order, allowing the goods to be released.
Take Delivery & Maintain Import Records
Collect the shipment from the port or airport and retain invoices, Bills of Entry, duty payment records, certificates, permits, and other documents for future compliance and audits.
